Stage 14, July 18: Rodez – Mende, 178.5 km

Four categorized climbs are on offer in Stage 14, but one dwarfs the others: the Côte de la Croix Neuve. Only a second category climb, Croix Neuve continues this Tour’s theme of ending stages with a short, sharp shock. It will cause pain.

Contador has won here twice before in his career, but in his last attempt he was bested in a good show by Joachim Rodgríguez and followed to the line by an irate teammate, Alexandre Vinokouov, who wanted the win for himself.

Highlights:

Km 20: Côte de Pont-de-Salars (4th-cat., 1.3 km at 5.8%)

Km 78.5: Intermediate sprint at Millau

Km 89.5: Feedzone at Le Mas

Km 146: Côte de Sauveterre (2nd cat., 9 km at 6% avg.)

Km 169.4: Côte de Chabrits (4th cat., 1.9 km at 5.9%)

Km 170 (finale): Côte de la Croix Neuve (2 cat., 3 km at 10% avg.)
