Stage 4, Tuesday, August 21: Barkalao-Estación de Valdezcaray, 155.4 km (mountain)

Today’s stage will wrap around the borders of Vizcaya, Alava, Burgos before finishing in La Rioja at the ski station of Valdezcaray.

There are two categorized climbs, both first category: the Puerto de Orduña (Km 57.1 and the finale at the ski station after 160.6 km.

As Contador has remarked, the final climb is not as hard as many others in this edition of the Vuelta, but before it begins at Im 147.2, there will already have been 35.3 km of upward tilt. After the first appearance of mountains yesterday, the climb to Valdezcaray is likely to further define which riders are capable of making a play for the overall title of Vuelta a España 2012.

The two sprint points are purposely located in the final third of the course, at Km 111.9 and at Km 130.4, in order to “increase spectacle.”
